Joseph Joe Thomas Tasker (1948-1982)
Joe Tasker, ex-Jesuit, ex-dustbinman, ex-quarryman, ex-sociologist and,
ultimately, ex-climber, followed a prolonged alpine apprenticeship, often
climbing with Dick Renshaw. The pair specialised in dangerous north faces
and first became famous after making the long awaited first British winter
ascent of the Eiger Nordwand in 1976 before following it up with an audacious
two-person ascent of the highly technical Dunagiri in the Indian Himalaya,
travelling all the way to their destination in a £170 Escort van.
